Cervical
Screening is not a test for cancer.
It is a method of preventing cancer by detecting and treating early
abnormalities which, if left untreated, could lead to cancer in
a women's cervix (the neck of the womb).
All
women between the ages of 25 and 64 are eligible for a free cervical
screening test every three to five years. This means that women
are provided with a more targeted and effective screening programme.
Women who are in the eligible age range will automatically be invited
every three to five years as long as they are registered with a
GP. Information leaflets are available giving more details about
having a smear test. CERVICAL SCREENING - The Facts is sent
out to every woman with her invitation letter. GP practices and
clinics can obtain copies of this leaflet from the DoH publications
orderline by telephoning 08701 555 455 and quoting 272855/Cervical
Screening or by email to dh@prolog.uk.com
This
leaflet is available in Braille, audio and large print. Language
versions are also available.
