Quality
Assurance Reference Centre
History
In April, 1999, Quality Assurance in the Cervical Screening Programme
became the responsibility of regional offices of the NHS executive.
The present North-West QARC was established at the Liverpool Women's
Hospital - a site chosen for its suitability and immediate availability
and not for its geographical location. At the same time the old North-West
and Mersey Regions merged to form a new North-West Region. The region
presently has an eligible screening population of around 1.730 million
(Statistical Bulletin 2005/06). It consists of three Strategic Health
Authorities, 22 laboratory units, 35 colposcopy units and many hundreds
of clinics and GP practices overseen by the 24 Primary Care Trusts.
Each plays an important part in the cervical screening programme and
the Quality Assurance Reference Centre holds a key role in the management
of it.
