Agencies throughout the region are responsible for the timely
call and recall of women for screening. It is their Exeter databases
which produce patient notification lists for GP practices (so
that information can be checked), and subsequently generate
appropriate letters in order that a woman presents herself for
a smear at the right time. Annual submission of statistical
data provides a wealth of information about coverage, smear
results by Primary Care Trust and other useful information which
is checked by the QARC and later published in the Department
of Health Statistical Bulletin.
The system also monitors the transfer of women
between Primary Care Trusts. A most important function is
to assist in follow-up of women with abnormal results, and
subsequent fail-safe procedures
