Cervical
Cancer in the UK
Approximately
3,240 new cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in the UK each year.
A further 22,000 women are treated for pre-cancerous conditions of
the cervix (where cells in the cervix show changes that can lead to
the development of cancer).
World-wide, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women.
Currently, in the UK, it is the most frequent type of cancer in women
under 35 years of age and is the eighth most common cancer in women.
There were 2,740 new cases of invasive cervical cancer in England
and Wales in 1997. This is a 26% fall in incidence over the previous
five years with 9.3 cases per 100,000 women(1).
